Our Flag

Feature-length film, Greenland 2025

Available on 11/4/26, 6:00 PM
A red sun rising over the sea. That motif, in abstract form, graces Greenland’s flag, which was designed in 1985 by artist Thue Christiansen. Erfalasorput, or "our flag" as the Greenlanders proudly call it, embodies their cultural and spiritual identity, as well as pride and unity. The film uses the designer’s personal memories, alongside interviews and archive material, to tell the story of its creation. It explores how a graphic symbol became an expression of self-image and self-determination. And that also involves coming to grips with Greenland’s colonial past. Following the screening, there will be a discussion with Inunnguaq Petrussen, the CEO of the Greenlandic Film Institute founded in 2026. The talk will focus on the role that design, art, and culture play in modern Greenlandic identity against the backdrop of current public debates on the country’s autonomy and future.
