Onokyo available to the accredited audience! — Whenever filmmaker Darío Aguirre would come home with bad grades as a child, his grandmother would admonish him: “Remember who your great-great-grandfather was!” The Ecuadorian family has always been proud of its German ancestor, the explorer and geographer Theodor Wolf. He died a hundred years ago, and now roads, volcanoes, and even the world's smallest octopus are all named after him. But was Wolf really as heroic as the family legacy of memories? And how can it be that Wolf's descendants in Germany know nothing about his descendants in Ecuador? In search of clues, Aguirre talks to relatives and researches Wolf's life. And as he does so, one woman in particular begins to come to the foreground: his indigenous great-great-grandmother Jacinta Pasaguay, about whom nothing is said today. With his usual ease and curiosity, Aguirre approaches a dark chapter in his family's history and deals with complex questions of colonial past, identity, and origin.
