Phantoms of the Sierra Madre

Danish writer Lars Andersen loved cowboy films as a child and was fascinated by North America’s indigenous peoples. After reading a 1937 book by a Norwegian explorer who posited that descendants of the Apache lived in Mexico’s Sierra Madre mountains, he set out to see for himself. On the trail of a fascinating story, but with little background information, he talks to people in the region and asks his way around. In the US, he meets Pius, a descendant of Geronimo, one of the last great resistance fighters against the white settlers. Pius wants to accompany Lars, hoping to find more of his own people in Mexico. But the film project creates a stir, attracts shady players, and reveals painful truths. Lars and his crew are forced to confront some uncomfortable questions – about the myth of the white explorers, as well as their own role as documentarians. Who is telling whose story?
