In a Nepalese village deep in the forest, Pirati lives as the matriarch of a Kinnar community. The Kinnar, people of a third gender in South Asia, live according to their own tenets and perform important village rituals. Pirati takes care of the young women in her community, but yearns for a different life with the man she loves – whom she can only meet in secret. The forest around the village is inhabited by wild elephants. To protect their houses and crops, the community members undertake nightly patrols. When one of the young Kinnar women vanishes, Pirati asks the police and villagers for assistance – and has to face the fact that her community is not considered equal by others. Finally, Pirati takes the investigation into her own hands. In the process, she gets caught in the crosshairs of her responsibility to those who rely on her, and her longing for a self-determined life.
