Also available as part of the short film program Filmforum Shorts: Archaelogy of Memories ⸺ Mallorca, a holiday dream. And an island with too many tourists and too little living space. But there is also another story hidden between the colourful beach umbrellas and picturesque hiking trails: a tightly entangled one of military dictatorship and forced labour, of forgetting and concealment, of the struggle for memorial sites… Jaume Serra Cardell, a teacher from Sa Pobla, was shot dead in 1937 in the military fortress of Illetes, on Mallorca. Today, his niece is fighting for a critical examination of the historical past and is collecting evidence. Director Jule von Hertell searches for clues on the Balearic island, and and focuses on forms of transcultural remembrance as well as politically motivated silence. In her research on the historical entanglements in German-Spanish history, she pursues a form of filmic archaeology that explores the invisible and the untranslatable.
