The Painter

Short Film, Germany 2026

Available on 11/4/26, 6:00 PM
Since 2019, artist Donata Wenders has paid tribute to traditional crafts that have lost their significance in the wake of mechanisation. In her series "Ode to Handcraft", she turns her attention to handiwork, focusing on respect for the handling of materials and masterful craftsmanship. Smooth transitions, visual echoes, atmospheric sound collages, and specially composed music transform her film installations into audiovisual poems. "The Painter& was created for Lübeck's St. Annen Museum to mark the 600th anniversary of the city’s painters’ guild. The film portrays the craftsmanship of painter Robert Bosisio, and challenges the supposed boundaries between craft and art. The film installation will celebrate its world premiere with an exclusive cinema projection prior to going on display in the new permanent exhibition at the St. Annen Museum. Following the screening, Donata Wenders and Noura Dirani, director of the Kunsthalle St. Annen, will discuss the relationship between handcraft and art.
