Aida is gifted in the areas of language and the natural sciences. She studies rocks and conducts experiments on her own. But the sensory overload of school stresses her out. And social interactions often cause her anxiety. Aida is a child on the autism spectrum. She is also a young person who possesses strength and determination. Inspired by Greta Thunberg and supported by her mother, she becomes an activist. Despite her difficult and exhausting daily life, she organizes rallies aimed at politicians and the public, conducts surveys, and untiringly explains what life in our society is like for neurodivergent people. Aida does not want pity, she wants change. She demands a school system that supports neurodiverse children and teens, helping them to reach their full potential. Aida sometimes loses her stamina and patience in this struggle. But she also finds allies and a community. Maija Hirvonen’s documentary is both a portrait of an individual and an urgent call to action. It questions our normative thinking. How fair is our society, and to whom?
