A small village in the middle of the forest, hermetically sealed off from the rest of the world; sometime in the not-too-distant future. One suspects that something sinister has happened. Skalde lives with her mother, who the superstitious village community shuns as an outsider. But the young woman is the protégé of Pesolt, the village leader, and she wants to belong. Skalde finds a lonely girl in the forest and takes her in, leading conflicts to boil over since no strangers are allowed in the village. At the same time, mysterious events become more frequent: animals have been killed, and the mangled carcass of a ram lies on the riverbank. Wanting to protect young Meisis, Skalde negotiates with the village community. Though she tries to reach a compromise, further incidents take place that make the situation dangerous for Skalde and Meisis.
Director Sophie Bösch’s debut film is an adaptation of Helene Bukowski's novel of the same name, a mystery thriller somewhere between a post-apocalyptic story and folk tale, with elements of paranoia and the will to survive.
