Home Sweet Home

In a small Danish village, Sofie begins her first day as a home caregiver for the elderly. In the presence of an elderly woman, a colleague briefs Sofie about her job and calculates the minutes needed for the individual duties – there is no time to dry the dishes. The patient seems to be used to constant staff changes, and explains to the new caregiver how to connect the colonoscopy bag. Sofie interacts with spry, bedridden, and demented people, meeting them all with an obliging warmth. But the overburdened single mother takes the stress and strain home with her, which affects her relationship with her ten-year-old daughter. The film resolutely unfolds from the perspective of the young woman, and the viewer gets to know not only her patients and their lives but also experiences the daily emotional challenges of her work. The occasional use of non-professional actors, who bring their personal situation to the narrative, enhances the authenticity of the scenes.
